Miranda Class History
The USS Miranda entered active service in the year 2243 as a smaller version of the Constitution class with many parts of both classes being virtually identical.
In the 2270s the Miranda class vessels underwent a major refit to increase service lifetime, at a similar time to the refit of the Constitution class.
In the following years the class began to be outperformed by newer more capable starships and became the subject of a review and the expected retirement from service. However, it was decided to use the Miranda class design as a general purpose ship inside the Federation, as it's low cruising speed meant it had become poor as an exploration vessel. It's weapons received an upgrade, science labs were removed and the class was used as a border patrol ship amongst many other functions. This is how the class continues to serve the Federation today, though many have been lost in the Dominion war.
The most recent development in the class' history is the discovery of serious hull breakdown on a number of vessels, most likely a result of it's long service period, though the official report has not yet been released. This leaves the future of the Miranda class in serious doubt.
The USS Raider - NCC 42558
The Raider is a variant B refit of the original Miranda class design, with 12 decks. It has been fitted with a small science lab facility on deck 7 as well as holodecks on deck 11, though it's primary function remains that of a patrol vessel. The Raider lacks the 'rollbar' seen on many Miranda class ships which contained weapon and sensory equipment, instead having sensors in side mounted pods. It is to operate mainly as a light cruiser inside and on the borders of the Federation.
